ArtThatFits Blog » Akiane: A Child Prodigy

I have a deep admiration for any artist who can skillfully create a likeness of a person. For me, Rembrandt created some of the most exquisite portraits ever made. I am deeply inspired by them, but try as I might, I never have achieved the results I keep hoping for in my own work. I find my best attempts have no heads or fingers! I can honestly say I have learned all the best poses where I am able to hide both!

I recently learned about Akiane (pronounced Ah-kee-ah-nuh), a 13 year old girl, who lives with her parents and brothers in Idaho. She began drawing people as a very young child. Her attempts at 4 and 5 years of age looked comparable to my current work as an adult, and by the age of 8 she was painting like a master. Her painting, The Prince of Peace was created at that age. She believes her gift came from God. Akiane says “I have been blessed by God. And if I am blessed there is one reason and one reason only and that is to help others.”

At age 13, she is already considered by some to be one of the 20 most accomplished visual artists in the world. In addition, she is a poet. In her short life she has authored two books and has appeared on TV shows around the world, including Oprah. The picture of her with Oprah shows one of her self-portraits, painted at age 8.

As if that isn’t enough, she also is fluent in Lithuanian, Russian, English and sign language! I will keep working on my English skills, trying to improve my use of the only language I know!

I don’t intend to give up drawing people. I am not totally unhappy with what I have accomplished to date, but at this point they just aren’t up to par with Akiane’s work back when she was 5 or 6! When I have one worth sharing, I will let you know.
